How to Plan a Xinjiang Tour from Indonesia

Why Xinjiang Appeals to Indonesian Travelers

For Indonesian travelers, the dramatic landscape contrast makes Xinjiang most appealing. Indonesia features oceans, islands, volcanoes and tropical views, while Xinjiang is dominated by deserts, snow peaks and endless grasslands. From Indonesia to Xinjiang, you leave humid tropical jungles and arrive at a dry, open land with cool mountain mornings and no coconut trees in sight. The surreal scenery brings an otherworldly amazement hard to find elsewhere.

You may be used to sea horizons, yet Xinjiang offers breathtaking land skylines. Standing in Taklamakan Desert or Ili grasslands, you can see land stretching endlessly to meet the blue sky. This grand view delivers a totally different shock compared with ocean scenery.

Food forms a natural bridge, with a spirit of diversity in unity. Like Indonesia, halal dishes are everywhere in Xinjiang, from street-side lamb skewers to shared platters of pilaf. But the flavors are different. No sambal, sweet soy sauce, or coconut milk here; instead, cumin, dried chilies, and charcoal smoke define the taste. Tearing fresh naan from the tandoor or sipping salty milk tea in a Uyghur restaurant feels both comforting and completely new.

Culturally, a shared religion brings a sense of familiarity. Yet everything looks and sounds a bit different. Blue-tiled domes and Central Asian-style mosques instead of the designs back home, the call to prayer echoing from mud-brick old towns rather than tropical alleyways, and Uyghur spoken on the streets instead of Indonesian. This mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar leaves a deep impression.

There’ s also the appeal of a different kind of openness. Scenic areas may get crowded just like Indonesian resorts, yet crowds only gather locally and temporarily. After a long line at a viewpoint, a ten-minute drive can take you into an endless gobi, silent except for the wind. For anyone used to Indonesia’ s dense city life, simply stepping out into such boundless space is a quiet kind of relief.

How to Get to Xinjiang from Indonesia

There are no direct flights from Indonesia to Xinjiang, but regular direct flights connect Indonesia to Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Xiamen. Travelers can then take domestic flights or trains onward to Xinjiang.

For connecting flights from Jakarta(JKT)to Xinjiang, major transfer hubs are Guangzhou Baiyun(CAN), Shenzhen Bao’an(SZX), Shanghai Pudong(PVG)and Xiamen Gaoqi(XMN) International Airports. Most routes are operated by China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. The whole journey takes 11 to 16 hours depending on layover duration. Guangzhou stands out as the most convenient transfer choice, thanks to its proximity to Southeast Asia and numerous daily flights to Urumqi Tianshan International Airport(URC).

If you are departing from Surabaya Juanda International Airport (SUB) or Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), there are fewer options. Most itineraries require a stop in Jakarta first, followed by a connection through Guangzhou, Shanghai, or Hong Kong. Total travel time from these cities can range from 14 to 20 hours or longer. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a common transit point for travelers from Bali, served by Cathay Pacific.

If you are departing from smaller Indonesian cities such as Medan (KNO), Makassar (UPG), or Yogyakarta (YIA), the journey typically requires two stops—first through Jakarta or another regional hub, and then through a major Chinese city—making the total travel time likely to exceed 24 hours. These routes are workable but require careful planning and patience.

As the capital of Xinjiang, Urumqi is an ideal first stop or transit hub. However, Xinjiang is vast and has multiple airports. If you plan to explore only the north or the south, you can also choose to fly directly to Altay, Ili, or Kashgar.

airport-map.png

When booking flights, it is highly recommended to purchase a through-ticket that covers the entire journey, ideally on a single airline or within the same alliance. This way, if a delay causes a missed connection, the airline will rebook you on the next available flight at no extra charge. Additionally, allow at least three hours for international-to-domestic transfers at large Chinese airports. You will need to clear immigration, collect your luggage, and re-check it for the domestic leg to Xinjiang, and the queues can be long.

Finally, flight schedules and routes may change, especially for seasonal services. For the most accurate information and better fares, check directly with airlines or reliable booking platforms 2 to 4 months before your planned travel date.

Entry Policy: 240-hour Visa-free Transit Entry

Good news: China has made it much easier for Indonesian passport holders to visit.

Since June 12, 2025, Indonesia has been added to China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit program. This means you can enter China without a visa through any of 60 designated ports across 24 provincial-level regions, as long as you hold a valid passport and an onward ticket to a third country or region. You can stay for up to 10 days and travel within the permitted area for tourism, business, or family visits.

Please note that this is a transit policy. You must have a confirmed ticket to a third destination (e.g., Jakarta→Urumqi→Kuala Lumpur). If you plan to fly directly back to Indonesia from China, you may need a regular tourist visa. Check with the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta for the latest visa-free arrangements, as China has been expanding unilateral visa waivers for various countries.

Also, please make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay.

What Makes Xinjiang Worth Visiting

So why travel all the way to Xinjiang? Here is what makes this region truly special:

1. No Worries About Food or Daily Needs

Xinjiang is one of the most halal-friendly destinations in China. Halal restaurants are everywhere, just look for the green sign with a white crescent or Arabic script. Mosques are easy to find in every city, from the grand Id Kah Mosque in Kashgar to smaller neighborhood prayer halls. You can enjoy roast lamb skewers, hand-pulled noodles (laghman), samsa pastries, and fragrant pilaf without ever worrying about what is on your plate.

2. Spectacular Natural Landscapes

Xinjiang's scenery is jaw-dropping: snow-capped mountains, alpine lakes, vast grasslands, golden deserts, and colorful rock formations. It is one of the most geographically diverse regions on Earth.

3. Deep Silk Road History

For over 2,000 years, Xinjiang was the heart of the Silk Road. You can walk through ancient cities, explore thousand-year-old Buddhist caves, and stand where caravans once crossed the desert.

4. Vibrant Local Culture

From the Sunday Bazaar in Kashgar to the Uyghur teahouses of Turpan, Xinjiang pulses with life. Markets are filled with handwoven carpets, copper teapots, dried fruits, and the aroma of freshly baked naan.

5. Safety and Convenience

International visitors consistently report feeling safe throughout Xinjiang. High-speed trains connect major cities, mobile payment is widely accepted, and English-speaking guides are increasingly available.

Best Time to Visit Xinjiang

Spring: Apricot Blossoms (April–May)

Spring in Xinjiang is gentle and full of vibrant color. In Taxkorgan, the valleys come alive with apricot blossoms against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, creating a scene that feels almost unreal. The weather is mild and comfortable, and since this is before the summer rush, you can enjoy the landscape in relative peace without jostling through crowds.

Summer: Endless Grasslands (June–August)

Summer is when Xinjiang reveals its full beauty. The grasslands of Ili and Nalati turn a deep green, Kanas Lake shimmers under bright skies, and the whole region becomes a playground for hiking, camping, and family road trips. This is the peak travel season with the best accessibility, so expect more visitors but also the fullest experience—long daylight hours, lively bazaars, and endless outdoor possibilities.

Autumn: Golden Leaves (September–October)

Many travelers say autumn is the golden time to visit Xinjiang. Around Hemu Village and Kanas Lake, entire forests shift into brilliant shades of gold and orange, reflected in clear rivers and lakes. The temperatures are comfortably cool, the light is soft and perfect for photography, and the harvest season brings fresh fruits and a festive atmosphere to local markets.

Winter: Snow & Skiing (November–March)

Winter transforms Xinjiang into a quiet, snow-covered world that feels far removed from the busy summer scenes. The Altay region becomes a top destination for skiing and snowboarding, drawing winter sports lovers from across China and beyond. With fewer tourists around, you get a peaceful, almost private experience of snow-laden forests, frozen lakes, and cozy village life.

The Most Popular Places Worth Visiting for Indonesian Travelers in Xinjiang

1. Kashgar: The Soul of the Silk Road

If you only visit one place in Xinjiang, make it Kashgar. Kashgar Old Town is a maze of sunlit alleys, mudbrick houses, and carved wooden balconies that feel frozen in time. The Id Kah Mosque, the largest in China, stands at the heart of the city—a spiritual and cultural landmark. Nearby, the century-old teahouse is the perfect spot to sip brick tea and watch local life unfold. Don't miss the Sunday Bazaar, one of the liveliest markets in Central Asia, where you can find everything from carpets to spices. For nature lovers, a day trip along the Karakoram Highway to Karakul Lake offers unforgettable views of the Pamir Plateau. Many Indonesian visitors say Kashgar reminds them of home because of the food, the sounds, the warmth of the people.

2. Urumqi: The Modern Gateway

Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital, is where most visitors arrive. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum is a great introduction to the region's history and ethnic cultures. The International Grand Bazaar is a must-see. It is a huge market filled with handicrafts, dried fruits, carpets, and local snacks, all in a stunning Islamic architectural complex. You can easily spend hours here shopping and people-watching.

3. Kanas Lake: A Fairytale Landscape

Located in the far north near the Altay Mountains, Kanas Lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters that change color with the seasons, from turquoise to deep green to slate gray. Surrounded by dense forests and snow-capped peaks, it feels like a hidden paradise. The nearby Hemu Village, home to the Tuvan people, offers a glimpse of traditional wooden houses and a slow, peaceful way of life.

4. Ili River Valley: Endless Grasslands

The Nalati Grassland and Kalajun Grassland in the Ili Valley are among the most beautiful pastures in China. You can see rolling green hills stretch to the horizon under wide blue skies. It is perfect for horseback riding, photography, or simply breathing in the fresh mountain air. Sayram Lake, a stunning alpine lake along the way, is often called "the last tear of the Atlantic".

Conclusion

Xinjiang is not just another destination. It is a place where you can feel genuinely at ease while discovering landscapes and cultures unlike anything back home. Halal food is everywhere. Mosques are within reach. The people are warm and welcoming. And the scenery, from the snowy peaks of the Tianshan Mountains to the golden sands of the Taklamakan Desert, will stay with you long after you return.

With easier visa policies, affordable flights, and a growing number of convenient tour packages, there has never been a better time to plan your Xinjiang adventure. Whether you choose a 7-day classic tour or a deeper 13-day Silk Road journey, Xinjiang welcomes you with open arms.

Selamat jalan and enjoy the journey!
