Best Time to See Rapeseed Flowers

In general, Xinjiang’s rapeseed blooming season spans from late April to early August, with different regions flowering at different times due to altitude and climate.

Southern Xinjiang has the earliest bloom. From late April to early May, you can enjoy rapeseed flowers against rugged Gobi Desert and striking Danxia landforms, making it the ideal choice for an early flower trip.

Moving to northern Xinjiang, the blooming period starts in early summer. June to early July is the prime time for Yili Valley and Barkol. During this period, Yili features overlapping golden rapeseed and purple lavender, while Barkol presents peaceful views of rapeseed fields blending with alpine grasslands and clear lakes.

Zhaosu – the most classic rapeseed flower base

If you only have time to visit one rapeseed spot in Xinjiang, Zhaosu is definitely my top recommendation—it’s the most classic and iconic rapeseed base in the region. When you arrive here in early July, you must be shocked by the vastness of the flower sea: nearly one million mu of golden rapeseed stretches endlessly to the horizon with the wind blowing through the flowers, creating waves of golden ripples that smell faintly sweet.

Yili Valley – rapeseed & lavender in one trip

For those who love colorful flower scenes, Yili Valley is a dream come true—come to see both golden rapeseed and purple lavender in one trip. The rapeseed fields here are scattered among the green grasslands and clear rivers, not as vast as Zhaosu’s, but more delicate and charming. What makes it special is that you can drive a short distance from the rapeseed fields to Horgos’ lavender fields—imagine walking from a golden sea into a purple cloud, with the fragrance of both flowers mixing in the air.

Barkol – grassland and lake flower scenery

Barkol has a unique charm that’s hard to find elsewhere: rapeseed flowers surrounded by grasslands and lakes. The scenery here is more tranquil and primitive—no crowds, just the sound of the wind, the fragrance of flowers, and the occasional bleat of sheep. You can also camp by the lake at night—watching the stars above the flower sea is an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent, as there are more mosquitoes by the lake.

Aksu – Highland rapeseed fields under Tianshan

Rape flowers in Aksu are mainly located in Bozidun Kyrgyz Township of Wensu County. At a relatively high altitude, they bloom from late June to July. Large stretches of golden flower fields are set against the Tianshan Mountains, residential houses and meadows. Besides being an oil crop, they also boost rural tourism.

Taxkorgan – Pamir rapeseed with snow mountain views

Rape flowers in Taxkorgan are concentrated in Kaneryang Village on the Pamir Plateau at an altitude of about 3,000 meters. They blossom in May. The flower fields are small in scale and scattered among river valleys and villages, with the Kunlun snow mountains and Tajik stone houses as the backdrop, featuring strong plateau customs.

Travel Tips for Xinjiang’s Rapeseed Flower Fields

• Mosquito & Insect Protection

There are lots of mosquitoes and bugs around the flower fields and grasslands. Bring mosquito repellent, insect spray and anti-itch ointment to avoid bites, especially in the morning and evening.

• Sun & Weather Prep

UV rays are extremely strong in Xinjiang, especially in June and July. Wear high-power sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat. The temperature drops sharply after sunset, so take a thin long-sleeve jacket or cardigan with you. Sudden light rain is common in mountain areas, keep a disposable raincoat in your bag.

• Necessary Supplies

There are few shops near large flower fields. Bring enough drinking water, snacks and basic personal medicine, motion sickness pills and band-aids in advance, as medical support is not easily accessible around the scenic spots.
