Located in the northwestern part of Xinjiang, the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture is bounded on The west and the north by Kazakstan, with the Tianshan Mountains on the south and Jungar Basin on the east, covering an area of 27 thousands square kilometers. It has under its jurisdiction Bole City and two counties of Jinghe and Wenquan. People of 35 nationalities live in the prefecture, including the Mongol, Han, Uygur, and Kazak, totaling some 400 thousands. Located in a favorable natural environment, here has ever been a communications center of the northern route of the Silk Road. Here have extensive grasslands, beautiful lakes and numerous hot springs, and so the Mongolian here call it "Borta la", which means "green grassland". There are countless visitors coming here every year for its strong customs of different nationalities, grassland cultures of long standing, and beautiful natural landscapes. At present, the second "Eurasian Continental Bridge" is through the prefecture and then leads into the Commonwealth of Independent States and the occident. The Bortala will certainly become an important window for our country to open to the west.
